Girlfriends of gov't officials occupying state flats without paying rent: minister reveals

Samuel Atta-Akyea

Mr Atta-Akyea, who decried the practice as "wrong," said a full-scale audit underway to uproot unqualified occupants.

The Minister of Works and Housing Samuel Atta-Akyea has made a jaw dropping revelation about how government flats meant for public workers are distributed to girlfriends of government officials.

Mr Atta-Akyea, who decried the practice as "wrong," said a full-scale audit was underway to uproot unqualified occupants.

“Some of them could be the girlfriends of some people.

You will be shocked to hear the kind of funny stuff going on in governmental circles, which is not good for the country," the minister told Joy FM.

He added: "We cannot have a situation where you will take the government for granted so we will certainly evict them."

Mr Atta-Akyea's comments confirm a long held belief among Ghanaians that state flats are not distributed on merit.

As a result, scores of government workers have been forced to rent at exorbitant prices and far from town.

Mr Atta-Akyea adds that some public officials come to tell him, "this is my nephew, let him leave there for free.”

“Meanwhile doctors and nurses are marking time looking for accommodation.

The audit will bring all these to bear and those there will be surcharged, he lamented.

“I don’t see how any landlord will permit tenants to reside in their property without paying the requisite rent," he added.
